Curriculum

We are focused on developing the potential of future artists and preparing them for Kindergarten. We offer a variety of creative choices on a daily basis:

  • Process-Oriented Art: not ‘projects’, but an opportunity to explore a medium with no expectation of a product other than the satisfaction of involvement.
  • Music: time to sing, move, listen and make music.
  • Science: hands-on opportunities to better understand their physical world.
  • Group Times: time to share and learn about themselves, listen to stories, do plays, gather information and enjoy participation in a group.
  • Outside Time: lots of enclosed playground space to run, climb, swing, slide, dig and explore.
  • Always Available: blocks, puzzles, games, books, writing centers, and fine and large motor-skill opportunities.

3 Year Olds

Children learn best when they are comfortable and confident in themselves and their surroundings. Our focus is on providing activities and learning experiences through art, music, science, dramatic play and socialization for children who are three, turning four, throughout the school year.

We encourage family participation, and provide opportunities for families to get involved in the classroom, if they wish.

We support parents/guardians by hosting parent education classes, providing opportunities for hearing, vision, and speech screening at school through an independent service, and by providing information on community services.

Children have opportunities to choose and learn from a variety of planned art activities including painting, gluing, cutting and manipulative materials. There are always dramatic play opportunities as well.

We have themes throughout the year, from Seasons to Your Senses. Sharing Time allows students the confidence of speaking to their peers about something that is special to them. Puzzles, dramatic play areas, tactile tables, an invention center, and manipulatives are always available during free exploration times.

Children start learning to negotiate and communicate with their peers as they interact with each other. Community Arts teachers help children through conflicts and with verbal communication when needed, guiding them in making good choices. Children learn to care for each other and their school.

Our playground is a creative space for large motor activities. On especially wet weather days, we use an inside play area.

Our school also provides children and their families opportunities to get involved in community charity help. We participate in the Make-A-Wish Foundation penny drive and collect monthly donations for families through the Neighborhood House Organization.

4 Year Olds

Welcome to the Community Arts Preschool four-year-old program. Using the age-appropriate Creative Curriculum, we prepare children for their journey into elementary school and help them become independent and feel they are an important part of our community.

We provide opportunities in the areas of art, music, science, dramatic play, as well as exposure to pre-math and pre-reading skills. We feel that when children are comfortable socially, learning comes more naturally.

Throughout the year, teachers help the children learn to negotiate their way through conflicts, help with verbal communication when needed, help them to make good choices and communicate with their peers as they interact with each other.

Learning comes best through a relaxed environment and through child’s play. Puzzles, dramatic play, tactile tables, invention centers and manipulatives are always available during free exploration times. We give the children opportunities to choose from a variety of activities planned around a focus of the week, including open-ended art, small motor development, and problem solving.

We expose the children to a variety of experiences through field trips in nature, music, and host special guests sharing talents from puppetry to reptiles.

We have a secure playground for large motor activities, or on the wettest days, we use a large indoor space, and also provide music classes.

The 4’s have so many special days, from studying native American culture, to pajama day and Mother’s Day Tea.

We encourage family participation as well as support parents and guardians by hosting parent education classes, opportunities for hearing, vision, and speech screening at school through an independent service. We provide families with opportunities to get involved in community charities, including the Make-A-Wish foundation annual penny drive and monthly donations to help families in need through the Neighborhood House Organization.
